We’ve all heard the saying, “Marriage is work”. It can be – but it all depends on how much you are willing to do to make the marriage survive – and thrive. Just because you now get to check the box “married”, it doesn’t have to turn into a synonym for “boring”. Keep things fun and exciting, and you’ll find marriage isn’t work at all, but a great new lifestyle that you can thoroughly enjoy.

10. Remember this is the man you dated for a few years, who was able to make your heart race each time you heard his voice. Keep that excitement going and you’ll wonder why people link “marriage” and “work” together.

9. Do unexpected things for him. On your way home from work, stop at the bakery for his favorite cake as a week night surprise. He’ll love you for it and you’ll get to enjoy it, too!

8. Make his favorite meal every now and then. Not often enough so that he gets tired of it, but often enough that he appreciates it – and appreciates you for making it.

7. Be gracious around his family. He will love you for it.

6. Surprise him with the new issue of his favorite magazine, then give him some alone time to read it.

5. Go with him to the sporting events he likes. Even if you don’t like the particular sport, go anyway. It’s nice that he wants you to be with him. If you decide to bow out, he may go with the guys while you’re left at home.

4. Be nice to his friends. You may not like all of them, but act like you do. If you tell him what you really think of them, it’s not going to end well. Just ignore your feelings on the subject and agree that his friends are great. (at least while he’s within earshot) When you are with your girlfriends, that’s a whole other story.

3. Once in awhile, listen to his favorite radio station without telling him how much you hate it. Grin and bear it till you can’t stand it any longer. Then suggest listening to your station for a time.

2. Compliment him on his wardrobe choices.

1. Be glad when he wants to make plans with his friends. This will give you some much needed alone time for your own interests. It’s emotionally healthy for you to both have your own space, without the other. Treasure your time together, but enjoy your time alone, too.

You’ll find that with a little practice, it’s really not hard to make your marriage work. Make sure you find a balance where he is doing the same type of things for you, and both of you will have the marriage you deserve.
